Tragedy At Sea How Many People Go Missing On Cruise Ships And Why?

cruise ship missing persons

This has led many people to think that she somehow fell, jumped, or was pushed overboard. On average, it’s around 19 people that go missing each year. This is out of the many millions of cruise ship passengers that travel aboard one of the 300+ cruise ships that sail the world’s oceans each year. The missing person's report came right as passengers were beginning to disembark in PortMiami following the the four-day Bahamas venture, the cruise line said. The crew refused to page Bradley until the ship was at port. They didn’t want to announce her disappearance or hang photos of her around the vessel because it might upset other passengers.

Annette Mizener Won A Cruise, Then Disappeared

When she failed to report for her shift, crew members started looking for Coriam. After they were unsuccessful, the United States Coast Guard and the Mexican Navy were alerted and joined the search. Jennifer claimed that she did not remember much from the previous night, and nobody ever admitted to knowing anything about Smith’s disappearance. Some theories claimed that he was thrown overboard by the men with whom he was arguing.

While on a family cruise to the Caribbean, Amy Lynn Bradley mysteriously vanished from the Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line’s Rhapsody of the Seas. The American woman was only 23 years old when she disappeared from the vessel on March 24, 1998. The most common theory is that she was swept overboard from the crew pool, or that she jumped or fell from the ship.

Hue Pham and Hue Tran

It’s thought that George Smith went overboard, but how that happened remains unknown. Merrian Carver disappeared from a Royal Caribbean Cruise to Alaska in August 2004. She had gone on the trip alone and used her cabin only on the first night, before disappearing on the second day of a seven-day Alaskan tour. Below is a list of people who were found, dead or alive, or their fate became known, after disappearing mysteriously at sea. The sheriff's office homicide and crime scene units were dispatched to Port Everglades to investigate.

Before her disappearance, Annette had reported being repeatedly harassed by an unknown man, but nothing was done by the crew of the ship. There was a surveillance camera that could have filmed the location but its view was obscured by a map placed in front of the lens. Further investigations found spots of blood near the scene and beading from her bag was scattered across the deck which suggests there could have been a struggle. In the last sighting of her, she was seen on surveillance video talking on one of the ship’s internal phones. A passenger approached her and asked her if she was okay, it looks like she replied to say yes.

Fariba Amani Disappeared While On A Cruise With Her Boyfriend

Although the ship was searched, the crew only searched common areas — not staff or passenger cabins. Carnival Cruises is continuing its investigation into McGrath’s disappearance and has been repeatedly reviewing closed-circuit video footage from the ship, a spokesperson told The Post Thursday. If someone goes missing and is known to have gone overboard, the ship will circle around and try to rescue them (around 1 in 4 people survive going overboard). If it’s not known where the person has gone then the ship’s Security Director will coordinate the search efforts. There are many reasons why people might disappear on a cruise ship. They may have fallen overboard or jumped off, or simply left the ship when it was in port.

Barnett's mother, Reid, said Carnival initially told her daughter — who is on the ship — there was no footage of what happened to her son. Carnival said it had informed the Coast Guard and the man's family of the development. The cruise line didn't release the man's name — though the man's mother, Elisha Reid, told BI in an earlier interview that her son, Barnett, was the missing passenger.

Famous Cases of Missing People on Cruise Ships

Investigations into such disappearances can often be inconclusive, as missing passengers are frequently never found. And while security footage can sometimes provide clues, some videos have produced more questions than they have answered. For that reason, the families of many cruise ship victims have written about their tragic experiences in an attempt to increase awareness about cruise ship safety. Throughout history, people have mysteriously disappeared at sea, many on voyages aboard floating vessels or traveling via aircraft. The following is a list of known individuals who have mysteriously vanished in open waters, and whose whereabouts remain unknown. In most ocean deaths, bodies are never recovered, but this fact alone does not make their disappearance mysterious.

Rebel Wilson claims a royal family member once invited her to a drug-fueled orgy

She said the Port St. Lucie community where she and her brother are from has been offering "a lot of love" to the family. McGrath's brother declined to comment when contacted by phone Tuesday. That last evening, he and his fiancee had gone to dinner with some friends they met on the cruise. They all had a few drinks and decided to hit up some of the nightclubs after dinner. In 2010, Rebecca Coriam started working for Disney Cruise Line and spent months visiting several ports in the Bahamas.

For example, the RMS Titanic was not a mysterious disappearance. All cruise ships are required to have 42-inch guard rails and man-overboard imaging under the 2010 Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act. When authorities were alerted that Amy was missing, the Netherlands Antilles Coast Guard conducted a four-day search in the surrounding waters and along the cruise lines to no result. In August 1998, tourists saw a woman resembling Bradley on a beach and in 1999 a member of the U.S.

Wikimedia CommonsThe Royal Caribbean cruise ship could hold up to 2,400 passengers as well as 765 crew members. Navy petty officer claimed to have seen a woman at a brothel in Curaçao who claimed to be Amy Bradley. The witness only contacted Amy's family after he retired and saw her picture in a magazine.

That year, the family received another promising clue — which turned out to be a devastating scam. Army Special Forces officer who could rescue Amy from armed Colombians holding her in Curacao. The Bradleys gave him $200,000 before they realized he was a fraud. The Bradley family also heard from witnesses who had seen Amy early the morning she had disappeared — with Alister Douglas, aka Yellow, in the vicinity of the ship’s dance club around 6 am. McGrath was with a big group of relatives on the three-day cruise to celebrate his father’s 60th birthday, his sister Danielle McGrath told USA Today.

Turkish police opened an investigation and concluded that Smith accidentally went overboard. Royal Caribbean ruled the disappearance a suicide, but without a proper investigation, Carver’s family will never know. On Sept. 16, 2012, my daughter Ariel, then 21, and I embarked on a seven-day Caribbean cruise with Royal Caribbean. According to The Sun, sightings of Amy Lynn Bradley range from tourists who think they spotted her on a beach in 1998 to a U.S. He claimed that she introduced herself to him as Amy Lynn Bradley and begged for his help — but he didn’t initially report it because he thought he’d get in trouble. Dr. Phil/Bradley FamilyA photograph that the Bradley family received in 2005, allegedly of Amy, that suggests she was sexually trafficked.

Reid said her son was a great father to his two twin girls, who she said now are orphans since their mom had earlier died. Reid said her daughter was very close to Barnett and had been texting her updates periodically from the ship. After learning about the unsettling case of Amy Lynn Bradley, check out the story of Jennifer Kesse’s disturbing disappearance. Then, read about the unexplained disappearance of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon.

One of the crew members reported that Carver appeared to be missing, but the ship made no effort to find her. They argue that it’s not uncommon for passengers to sleep in other people’s cabins or even disembark at one of the ports. At the end of the cruise, they found her belongings and donated them to charity. You may have seen TV shows like ‘Cruise Ship Killers’ or ‘Disappeared – Troubled Waters’ and wanted to know more about people going missing on cruise ships. It really is a rare event, but in this post, we will take a look at some disappearances at sea. Have you ever wondered how many people go missing on cruise ships?

Do The Cabins on The Celebrity Silhouette have Safes?

Solo cruisers are often hit hard with ‘solo supplements’ when they cruise. This means that a solo person may have to pay double the price of a person sharing with another passenger. I have shared a cabin with 3 other adults before, it isn’t ideal but for a short cruise it isn’t a problem. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. Suites that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.

The rest of the ship’s decks house restaurants, bars and entertainment and wellness venues. The cabins in the middle of deck 11 are located under the main pool deck. This shouldn’t be a problem in the evenings as the pool is usually closed but during the day you may here some noise when sunloungers are moved around, particulrly if you are on your balcony. The balcony cabin onboard the Celebrity Silhouette was one of the largest I’ve ever stayed in. The separate area with sofa was a bonus as we would often order room service (included in the cruise fare) and sit here to eat.

As avid cruisers, we've learned to go to the library as soon as possible after boarding for the best selection of titles. We selected an interior cabin for this voyage, as we appreciate sleeping in complete darkness after spending a day in the sun. We've sailed on this ship four times and each experience has been unique, even when the ports were the same.

Some oceanview and balcony cabins may have what is known as an ‘obstructed view’. An obstructed view simply means that there is something in the way of the window or balcony. An interior cabin is a cabin that is located on the inside of a cruise ship. Interior cabins are also called ‘inside’ cabins and they are usually the cheapest cabin grade available on a cruise. The design of all cabins onboard the Celebrity Silhouette are very similar. The curved bed can be seen in all staterooms, apart from the solo cabins.

What Are Interior Cabins on a Cruise?

This modern and functional conference center affords you all of the amenities of the office alongside gorgeous views of blue skies and calming sea. This is Celebrity's chic, new approach to the Internet lounge that's also the first Authorized Apple® Reseller at Sea. Here, you'll find state-of-the-art workstations featuring MacBook Pro® laptops and iMac® desktops where you can take a class, check your email, surf the web or print a boarding pass.

The bathroom is exactly the same as found in the standard inside cabins. This is usually more expensive than an inside cabin shared between two but is often cheaper than a solo cruiser having an inside cabin alone. This is very big for an inside cabin, as the average inside cabin is 15.7 meters squared. This may not sound like a huge difference but some inside cabins are as small as 11 meters squared. If sharing a cabin with 2 or 3 people, it is likely that the 3rd and 4th guest will be sleeping on the sofa bed and on the Pullman bed that pulls down from the ceiling. I recently stayed in a balcony cabin on the Celebrity Silhouette during a northern Europe cruise.

For example, one of the most beloved spaces aboard each Solstice-class ship is the Lawn Club, which you can find situated on Celebrity Silhouette’s Deck 15. The Porch is another lunch and dinner restaurant, with a deck-like feel. This popular spot on the Solstice Class ships anchors one end of the Lawn Club, the first half-acre of real grass on a cruise ship, on the highest deck. Spectacular views make this a relaxing ritual every evening.

It’s filled with plenty of plush seating, sun loungers and spots to soak in some rays while enjoying effortless service, cocktails and treats. Celebrity Cruises’ Silhouette is a sophisticated experience for a ship carrying nearly 3,000 passengers, without being overly stuffy. More energetic and with more extra-fee attractions than its three Solstice-class predecessors, the 122,400-ton Celebrity Silhouette debuted in July 2011 as the fourth of five ships in the now-iconic series.

The only way to get an obstructed view cabin is to specifically book an obstructed view cabin. When booking a ‘guaranteed’ cabin or any other cabin you will not be assigned an obstructed view. Category S2 handicap suites (2130, 2132, 2134, 2136) are without bathtubs. We'll send you the latest cruise updates daily to your inbox. You already know about the Retreat and the Lawn Club, both of which come with spots to lounge about in the sun, but the sunny spots don’t stop there. Over her life, Celebrity Silhouette has sailed around the world, including an array of Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries.

After leaving Southern Pacific in 1989, Jenkins relocated to Hawaii where he was introduced to Hawaiian artist Kapono Beamer and began writing music with him. This eventually led to their album Cruisin' On Hawaiian Time (2006), a collection of songs dedicated to the Hawaiian Islands. “Cool Love” would become the band’s last top 20 single in the United States. We open our top 10 Pablo Cruise Songs list with the song “Raging Fire.” While we always preferred the up-tempo Pablo Cruise songs over their ballads, they did have some great moments on some of their albums that were filled with sweet-sounding mid-tempo ballads. The harmonies on the track “Raging Fire” echo The Eagles just a bit on this one. The song was released on the band’s breakthrough album, A Place In The Sun. Pablo Cruise released seven albums throughout their career.

On November 8, 2011 Pablo Cruise released their first live album, It's Good to Be Live, on the Red Recording label. The live performances were taken from concerts performed at the Blue Goose in Loomis, CA on July 9 and 10, 2010. The CD also featured new versions of their songs "A Place in the Sun" (featuring fellow Red Recording artist Katrina) and "Love Will Find a Way" (with Ty Taylor of Vintage Trouble). Jenkins moved on to join country rockers Southern Pacific in 1987, alongside former Doobie Brothers members Keith Knudsen and John McFee and Creedence Clearwater Revival bass player Stu Cook.

Staying ahead of the competition, Ritz-Carlton debuted its first 149-suite Evrima yacht cruise in 2021, with a second 224-cabin ship scheduled to begin sailing later this year. Its least expensive itinerary is currently $5,100 per person for a six-night voyage from Barbados to Puerto Rico in early 2025. Four Seasons says the 9,975-square-foot mansion, partially perched in the ship's glass-lined funnel, will span four floors, four bathrooms, three bedrooms, and three powder rooms. Live albums

Some bands did it better than others, depending on their original style. Pablo Cruise already had an R&B dance feel to some of their songs, so this was not a stretch compared to when bands like Kiss and Queen went the disco route for an album. The single “I Want You Tonight,” was released in 1979 on the album Part of the Game. Our top 10 Pablo Cruise songs list presents ten of our favorite Pablo Cruise songs. A good majority of them were released on their two spectacular albums released in 1977 and 1978.

Two of the original members of Pablo Cruise, Cory Lerios and David Jenkins, joined us on The Morning Show to talk about their journey that began 51 years ago and the fact that there really isn’t a band member named Pablo Cruise. In mid-1981, Price left suddenly and was initially succeeded by Donny Baldwin, who had played with Elvin Bishop and would move on to Jefferson Starship by the summer of 1982. David Perper was next to take over the drum throne and Angelo Rossi was replaced by Stef Birnbaum (aka Stef Burns) after just one album. In 2017 the band was joined by singer/percussionist Robbie Wyckoff who had appeared with Pink Floyd's Roger Waters on his The Wall Live tour. Pablo Cruise is the debut album by the California soft rock group Pablo Cruise, released in 1975.

The album Worlds Away was an even more substantial effort than A Place in the Sun. “Love Will Find A Way” served as the lead single from the album. Around 1996, Jenkins and Cockrell reunited once again as Pablo Cruise, but Lerios and Price were unable to rejoin at the time. Keyboardist Kincaid Miller and drummer Kevin Wells (ex-Clover) were brought in to replace them, and percussionist James Henry also appeared with the band as an occasional special guest from 1999 to 2008. Additionally, second guitarist Kenny Emerson and two additional backup singers, Regina Espinoza and Carolyn, were also recruited (from 1999 to 2002) for added stage attraction. Drummer Billy Johnson (ex-Santana) frequently sat in for Wells during this same time.

The song reached the number six position on the Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 78, matching the success of  “Whatcha Gonna Do,” released in 1977. Along with Walter Egan’s “Magnet and Steel” and Toby Beau’s “Angel Baby,” “Love Will Find Away” was one of the most popular songs on the radio that summer. As we close in on the number spot on our top 10 Pablo Cruise songs list, we turn to the follow-up single and album, A Place in the Sun. The song “Love Will Find A Way” was a strong follow-up for the band and kept them at the top of the charts again.

While the band had bigger hits than this, the song has become the group’s signature song among the band’s most loyal fans. If there is one song that always got the audiences up and dancing at Pablo Cruise concerts, it is the excellent track “I Go To Rio.” The song was released on the Worlds Away album. The song was written and originally recorded by Peter Allen. “I Go To Rio”  was the third single released from the Worlds Away album. It’s incredible how many rock bands went disco in the late 1970s looking to cash in on the craze that swept the world.

Their first album was released in 1975, entitled Pablo Cruise. The band’s lineup on their first record consisted of David Jenkins, Steve Price, Bud Cockrell, and Cory Lerios. That lineup would release the band’s first three albums, Pablo Cruise, Lifeline, and A Place In The Sun. On the band’s fourth album, Bruce Day replaced Bud Cockrell on bass. The group would release three more albums after Worlds Away, including Part of the Game, Reflector, and Out Of Our Hands.

Demand has been growing, he said, "signaling that luxury travelers are looking for immersive, exclusive, end-to-end travel journeys that allow them to explore the world with their favorite brands." While not a luxury cruise line, Royal Caribbean's popular three-floor townhouse on the new Icon of the Seas is being booked at an average of $100,000 a week — although it's about four times smaller than Four Seasons' largest. Both suites' sizes and prices — Regent's starts at $42,000 per person for a total of $252,000 at maximum occupancy — would be stunted by Four Seasons' promise of a 9,975-square-foot, $350,000 floating mansion. Luxury operator Silversea says the largest suite on its upcoming 728-guest Silver Ray will be 1,324 square feet. Competitor Regent Seven Seas' new Seven Seas Grandeur debuted in 2023 with a more expansive six-guest 4,443-square-foot option. Four Seasons plans to expand its high-end hotels and resorts portfolio with a luxury 222-guest cruise ship.

You won't have to worry about finding transportation from an off-site parking lot because you'll be just steps away from checking in for your cruise. This lot is located a few miles from the cruise terminal and provides shuttle service to and from the terminal. If you're willing to do a little bit of walking, consider off-site parking options near the port. These lots tend to be slightly cheaper than those directly at the port itself. Just make sure to check their shuttle service schedule beforehand so you don't miss your ship's departure time. When it comes to saving money on cruise parking at the Port of Galveston, there are several types of discounts available.

Some of these lots offer shuttle services to take you to the terminal. If not, you will have to take a taxi or rideshare to the terminal. There may also be a short walk from the shuttle to the terminal entrance, which can be a hassle when carrying heavy luggage or traveling with children. Be sure to plan extra time into your travel schedule to arrive on time. Many of these lots are not police patrolled, so be sure to do your research into the security measures each facility has in place before parking.

It is now largely bilingual, with French and Creole also gaining a foothold with increasing waves of immigration from Haiti. It's hard to walk a block in Miami without coming into contact with Cuban food, Cuban music, Cuban culture. These days many of us have gotten used to airport security, complete with long lines, body scanners, and strict rules on what you can and cannot bring.

It’s not hard to find places to shop in Miami, but if there’s a particular type of shop you’re after, certain areas of the city are best. The Design District of Miami is known for its art galleries and high-end boutiques. Tropical bliss awaits in the Bahamas, where you’ll spend a day lounging on powdery white sand and dipping in warm turquoise waters. Sample some of the best rum in the world, feast on the freshest of seafood, or go snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea, where you’ll see colorful schools of fish and sea turtles. In the ship's interior areas, you'll find many bars, eateries and showrooms where fun is the focus, including restaurants where the waiters dance for you in between courses (something of a Carnival signature). The always-busy casino can be a fun zone for some, depending on the vagaries of Lady Luck.

Early on, resort developers looked to the Atlantic Ocean beaches of Miami Beach, beginning their development with the elegant Art Deco hotels at the southern tip, now better known as South Beach. As development proceeded northward its complexion changed, becoming more "high-rise" and grandiose, with amenities geared to a wider range of interests, from yachting to golf. That changed in 1896, when financier Henry Flagler extended his new Florida East Coast Railroad south from its previous terminus at West Palm Beach. By the turn of the 20th century the first of Miami's real estate booms was underway, a pattern that continued unabated right up to the Great Depression. Miami was one of the few places on earth where someone could offer you a get-rich-quick deal on 10 acres of swampland, and there was a good chance that you could actually get rich on it.

By the April 2018-signed agreement, NCLH guarantees Miami-Dade a minimum of 1,3 million passengers annually. MSC Terminal AAA (completed in October 2022) has capacity to handle MSC WORLD-Class liners (fleet's ever-largest, with passenger capacity 7000). On May 4, 2018, from Barcelona were delivered two large passenger boarding bridges. Tailor-made for "Terminal F’", each bridge is 2-ton and 4-sectioned (telescopic), with length 32 m (105 ft). In 2010 were handled 4,33 million cruise passengers (1 in 7 in the world).

Virgin Voyages has brand's name on a for-profit train connecting Miami with West Palm Beach (via Aventura and Boca Raton). Virgin's cruise operations from PortMiami were planned to start in April 2020 with Scarlet Lady. On November 28, 2018, Richard Branson (Virgin Group's Founder) and Tom McAlpin (Virgin Voyages' President and CEO) officially announced the plans for a new/exclusive cruise terminal in PortMiami. The new Terminal B has a dedicated waiting hall, separate bar lounge, service area, new parking garage, valet parking area (accessing the building directly). By the agreement, NCLH received preferential berthing rights at the new Terminal B. This means priority docking of vessels from the fleets of NCL, Oceania and RSSC-Regent. The required minimum number of ship calls (per fiscal year) is 45, which is 15 more than the previous agreement.

This is largely because Norwegian Encore and its sister ships boast unusually large private zones for solo travelers — something you won't find on the Miami-based vessels operated by Norwegian's main competitors. Plus, there's a giant "ship-within-a-ship" luxury zone loaded with suites and a private lounge and restaurant — one only accessible to well-heeled passengers who pay up for access. With fares for its rooms nearly 10 times higher than the starting rates for the ship's basic cabins, The Yacht Club, as it's called, is not a budget option.

For FY11 (fiscal year 2011), PortMiami reported an economic impact in Miami-Dade County of USD 18 billion, providing around 176,000 local jobs. Miami Metro is USA's 8th-most populous and 4th-largest, with population around 5,5 million. The city is a leader in international trade, commerce, finance, media, entertainment, arts. In 2010, it was ranked USA's 7th and world's 33rd in terms of human capital, business activities, information exchange, politics and culture. Nicknamed "Capital of Latin America", Miami is USA's largest city with Cuban-American citizens. Near the Miami cruise port, Bayside Marketplace is a popular waterfront shopping area with a variety of stores and eateries.

Cruise to Miami and head to Calle Ocho for hand-stitched guayabera shirts and hand-rolled Cuban cigars. MSC World America and Icon of the Seas, in particular, have several similarities, including public area venues segmented into "districts," as MSC Cruises calls them. All three vessels are among the most venue-filled in their respective fleets, with dozens of restaurants, bars, showrooms and over-the-top attractions on the decks.

Miami is also among the most fortunate ports where newest cruise ships make show-off visits and many schedule inaugural homeporting seasons. Port's facilities are among the most modern, providing easy processing and boarding. PortMiami serves 20+ cruise companies and 60+ different passenger ships. For cruising within Florida from Miami, options may be more limited since Miami is the primary Floridian departure point.

Royal Caribbean is leasing the land for an initial 20-year period (until 2048) at base rent US$9,5 million per year (annual increase 1,5%). In addition to the base rent, Miami-Dade County receives US$5,50 per cruise passenger in excess of 1,55 million pax. The new facility was designed by Arquitectonica and built by Fincantieri Infrastructure.

Preliminary itineraries for Icon of the Seas include Eastern and Western Caribbean options. With Brightline’s convenient train service, you’ll arrive at the cruise port relaxed and ready for your adventure. Enjoy comfortable seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, a variety of food and beverage options, and friendly service.

Assuming that there’s no contraband or prohibited items in your luggage, you’ll collect it on the other side of the x-ray machine and then proceed to check-in. We’ve covered all of your options in-depth here in our port transportation page. For most people, however, they will use one of a handful of options. Below, we’ve listed just a few hotel options (there are hundreds — if not thousands in the Miami area). Freedom TowerThe Freedom Tower is perhaps Miami’s most famous building. Originally built in the 1920s, the tower looks small and a bit out of place next to the towering modern skyscrapers nearby.

We suggest waiting until the second half of the boarding window to actually arrive. There is usually a big rush of people who want to board as early as possible, leading to longer lines. Waiting a little later can make check-in a breeze as the crowds have died down. There is space for oversized vehicles like RVs, but the rate is an additional $22 each day. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted, but debit cards are not.

By comparison, security at the Port of Miami is much more enjoyable. For a fun shopping mall experience with a quintessential Miami vibe, head to Bayside Marketplace. At this mall, you’ll also find restaurants and bars, street performers and live music, and even a launchpad for boat tours along the Miami coastline. Miami Seaquarium is another fun outing in Miami that is centered around animals, only here you’ll see ocean mammals. The Seaquarium features a variety of species, including bottlenose dolphins, crocodiles, and sea lions.

Carnival Alaska Cruise Reviews 2023 UPDATED: Ratings of Carnival Cruises to Alaska

Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages. If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures. Alaska cruise weather can be chilly (in the 40s to 50s) first thing in the morning and at night.

These ships are much smaller than Carnival’s mega-ships of recent times, like Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, which are more than twice the size of Spirit Class ships. Carnival has four ships sailing to Alaska, including Carnival Miracle, Carnival Legend, Carnival Luminosa, and Carnival Spirit, spread across varied itineraries over the next couple of years. With an overwhelming world of choices, we understand you may need some personal assistance to plan your perfect vacation. From finding the right destination to choosing the best departure date, we're here to help.

Day 6: Ketchikan

Glacial ice carved this passageway long ago, and today, cruise ships and fishing vessels thread their way through the islets and channels to see some of the most spectacular natural sights in the world. One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. While there are slight variations in Carnival Miracle and Carnival Freedom cruises to Alaska, these differences aren’t too significant. So, pick one that contains the activities that you and/or your family will enjoy the most. Some of the day excursions will have you zip-lining, glacier trekking, airplaning, or kayaking in the outdoors. Others will have you on a seaplane exploring five different glaciers in Juneau or simply viewing wildlife in its natural habitat.

What to know when picking a Carnival cruise to Alaska

The best time to book an Alaska cruise is when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. You'll have your pick of itineraries and cabins — balcony cabins are popular in this scenic destination — and often the best fares. For a view of the city and cruise port, take a ride in the sky on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Various wildlife-viewing trips (whale, bears and more) and visits to dogsled camps and salmon bakes leave from Juneau. Alaska cruises provide plentiful opportunities to learn about native Alaskan culture.

For all the beer lovers planning an Alaskan cruise vacation, we’ve curated the ultimate zythophile guide to visiting 5 of the best craft breweries in Alaska. Plan your romantic Alaskan cruise with our adventurer’s guide to discovering the coziest vacation spots and most scenic restaurants for couples traveling in Alaska. Planes are plentiful in Alaska, where they're a common form of transportation across the state. Charter a helicopter or fixed-wing flightseeing tour at Juneau and get an unforgettable perspective of the mountains and glaciers of this vast landscape.

You can get a taste of the Gold Rush life by trying your hand at panning for gold, attending a salmon bake or visiting a dogsled camp. A hike on the Chilkoot Trail or ride on the White Pass Railway lets you follow in the footsteps of the miners who came to seek their fortunes. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dogsledding or hiking adventure on the ice. If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway.

Carnival’s Alaska Shore Excursions Program Is Solid

The historic district still has a Wild West feel, though that's been a bit commercialized for the modern era. This port can get crowded in summer when several ships can call on the same day. The luxury cruise lines are your best bet if you're a couple and enjoy spacious suites, gourmet food, pampering (many luxe lines hire butlers to cater to every passenger) and the opportunity to meet other like-minded cruisers. The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages may also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement.

From Alaska’s incredible natural wonders and awe-inspiring landscapes, to its rich cultural heritage and history, nothing beats a cruise to this wild northern paradise. Embrace the grandeur of Alaska with Carnival Cruise Line, a trusted name in the industry that ensures a luxurious yet cost-effective cruising experience. From Carnival's wide range of amenities and services to diverse package options and exciting Alaskan destinations, we're committed to creating the vacation of your dreams. Your enchanting journey through Alaska's breathtaking landscapes begins at Carnival Cruise Line convenient departure ports.

However, what really sets Carnival cruises apart are their attentive stewards, comfortable staterooms, and fresh, colorful décor. These ships still offer lots of fun entertainment and activities that Carnival is famous for, like waterparks, slides, family venues, adult areas, and much more. All of Carnival’s ships sailing to Alaska are part of the cruise line’s Spirit Class, built in the early 2000s.

If you book a Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point. Ships like Carnival Miracle have more balconies than the fleet average, a plus for Alaska cruises. The cruise lines do not have the same suite selection that other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are known for in their vast fleets. Since there are quite a few different options for a Carnival cruise to the Land of the Midnight Sun, here is a breakdown of what you need to know when picking Carnival for an unforgettable Alaska cruise vacation. Carnival is, like every other cruise line, having some issues in Alaska with shore excursions needing to be modified or changed or, in some cases, canceled entirely due to tour operator staffing availability. While passengers won't find Alaskan beers onboard -- or even Alaskan seafood, for that matter, Carnival has managed to tweak some of its entertainment programming to offer a more Alaskan bent.

So, buckle up for the ultimate Alaskan adventure that you've always dreamed of. Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. Carnival's mid-sized cruise ships provide a good balance of activities to suit both kids and adults, although some are at an additional cost, such as the Seuss-themed brunch and Deal or No Deal game show.

Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens. Little kids will adore meet-and-greets with beloved characters onboard Disney cruises or hanging with Dr. Seuss characters when sailing with Carnival. Older kids will love the rock climbing walls, video game stations, sports courts, go-karts and laser tag on Royal Caribbean and NCL ships. In keeping with their mission to deliver fun vacations at sea and ashore, Carnival offers a sizeable range of excursions for a variety of activity levels, ages, and interests.

Alaska's capital city is interesting because no road leads from here to the rest of the state. It's located at the base of Mount Juneau, and you can only get there via boat or small plane — even residents have to bring their cars to Juneau via ferry. Home to Mendenhall Glacier, this is a popular port for hikes by, kayak tours to and helicopter landings on the glacier. Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit). Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage.

In 2023, Carnival Spirit will once again return to Seattle, where it will offer a standard weeklong itinerary to Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, Victoria and Tracy Arm Fjord. Sister-ship Carnival Miracle returns to San Francisco to offer 10-day sailings that visit Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, and Victoria. The ship will also operate two one-off cruises from Los Angeles (Long Beach) as part of the line's Carnival Journey's product of unique, longer sailings. Fortunately, Carnival's new triple-threat Alaskan cruise season isn't just a one-off. Next year, the line will continue to send three of its cruise ships to the Last Frontier.

Moreover, both tours were completely sold out, with two boats chartered for each departure. Seeing the Sawyer glaciers up close and personal is a moving experience and was worth it despite the cold and the rain. Thanks to the relatively ice-free conditions, Carnival Spirit was even able to make it all the way to the South Sawyer Glacier for the tour boats to rejoin the ship. Given its value-driven price point, we wouldn't have expected Carnival to offer much in the way of destination immersion aboard Carnival Spirit.
